These vegetated surfaces don’t just look pretty. They have other benefits as well, including cooling city blocks, reducing loud noises, and improving a building’s energy efficiency. What’s more, a recent modeling study shows that green walls can potentially reduce large amounts of air pollution in what’s called a “street canyon,” or the corridor between tall buildings.
For the study, Thomas Pugh, a biogeochemist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, and his colleagues created a computer model of a green wall with generic vegetation in a Western European city. Then they recorded chemical reactions based on a variety of factors, such as wind speed and building placement.
The simulation revealed a clear pattern: A green wall in a street canyon trapped or absorbed large amounts of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter—both pollutants harmful to people, said Pugh. Compared with reducing emissions from cars, little attention has been focused on how to trap or take up more of the pollutants, added Pugh, whose study was published last year in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
That’s why the green-wall study is “putting forward an alternative solution that might allow [governments] to improve air quality in these problem hot spots,” he said.Compared with reducing emissions from cars, little attention has been focused on how to trap or take up more of the pollutants, added Pugh, whose study was published last year in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Humanity has only two choices: either to start, once again, in every field an endeavor, to learn from the whole of nature, from the relationships within the whole cosmos, or to allow both nature and human life to degenerate and die off. There is no other choice. Today, no less than in ancient times, we are in need of knowledge, that can really enter into the inner-workings of nature. Collective Eye Blog: Prince Charles is into Biodynamic Farming, too!
This awesome article from the UK is all about Prince Charles’ influence on farming in the UK— and Rudolf Steiner’s influence on the Prince!
Prince Charles was first introduced to Steiner’s philosophies on a trip to Australia in 2005, after which he “organized workshops for farmers and…
ultimate recycling.
when you are done cutting your celery for dinner, keep the end knob bit and put it in some water (a takeaway container filled a third of the way should do) for a few days to a week. Once it starts to sprout its own little stalks and leaves, you can plant it in soil. Hopefully it will grow into its own celery.
to double your recycling, you can reuse a container as i have done here (it used to be a frozen yoghurt carton).
